          6. He was born in the city of Seville in Spain; his parents were Juan Rodríguez and Jerónima Velázquez. He studied art under Francisco Pacheco and became the court painter for King Philip IV. He lived in Madrid for most of his life and traveled to places like Italy.

          Velázquez was known for painting in a naturalistic style and his subject matter included everyday people as well as royal subjects.

          He influenced numerous artists like Édouard Manet and Salvador Dalí, among others.
