Pablo Casals, a Spanish cellist, conductor, and composer, emerged as one of the most brilliant virtuosos of the 20th century.
Early Life and Musical Education
Born on December 29, 1876, in Vendrell, Catalonia, Casals displayed musical aptitude from a young age.
"For me the existence of Pablo Casals is a source of joy," wrote Thomas Mann.
His father, an organist and teacher, provided his initial music lessons. By the age of 12, Casals had mastered several instruments. In 1888, he began studying cello under J. Garcia at the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona.
He continued his education in Madrid, Brussels, and Paris, where he also excelled in composition.
